Hypermobility & Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Annette specialises in working with patients with hypermobility, including those who may not have a formal diagnosis of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) or hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD).  As someone who lives with hypermobility herself she understands the unique challenges and skills needed to live well with this condition- and how successful management needs a creative and highly individualised approach.

Many patients with hypermobility have been told that they must exercise to improve their joint stability, pain and fatigue – but not given clear guidance on how to do so safely and effectively.  Annette’s approach includes very gentle osteopathic treatment, carefully personalised rehabilitation exercises and specific lifestyle management strategies which can provide meaningful changes in pain and quality of life.

If you are struggling to manage your hypermobility symptoms (even if following recommended ‘hypermobility-friendly’ exercise programmes) it’s really important to get skilled individual input to help you navigate the bumps in the road.  It is crucial to address proprioception and neurological function as a foundation in hypermobility before trying to add too much strength, and to take into account other issues such as dysautonomia (including POTS), neurodivergence or post-exertional symptom exacerbation when designing a rehabilitation plan.  With patience and a holistic approach, you can make progress towards living the life you want rather than having to constantly focus on managing symptoms.
